“Crowned in Cloth and Reflection” by LaSonja Polk ~ July 2025
She stands in silence, onlooking, tall and bright, A queen stitched from the threads of hope.
Her crown is lace, her robe aglow,
With stories only fabrics know.
In golden hues and rusted flame, Each pattern calls a sacred name.
A whisper from the past sewn tight— Harriet’s courage, Douglass’s fight.
“I’m free,” the music gently hums,
From stitched-in lines where freedom drums. A needle’s prayer, a thread’s embrace, Wraps history in a mother’s grace.
Beside her stands a child so small,
In patchwork love, she stands so tall. Circles of quilts, old dresses torn, Now worn as pride by daughters born.
Leopard prints frame their gentle stance, Woven in strength, not left to chance. Ancestral hands in silent praise,
Guide every seam, each layered phrase.
This is not fabric—this is flame,
A living art that speaks her name.
Queen of cloth, with roots so wide,
Holding the past, growing forward, pushing softly, the child, the pride.
